    Putting Out Wildfires Using Explosives

    Wildfires damage millions of acres of land per year in the United States alone. Using explosives to put out an uncontrolled wildfire sounds a bit crazy, but it’s actually not that far-fetched. The animations above are taken from high-speed footage of a propane fire interacting with a blast wave. The first animation shows what the human eye would see, and the second is a shadowgraph video, a technique which highlights differences in density and makes the flame’s convection and the blast wave itself visible. At close range, the shock wave from the explosion and the high-speed gas behind it push the flames away from their fuel source, stopping combustion almost immediately. For a flame farther away from the blast, the shock wave introduces turbulent disturbances that can destabilize the flame. Much work remains to be done before the technique could be scaled from the laboratory to the field, but it is an exciting concept. You can read more about the work here. (Research credit: G.     Convective Impressionism

    Buoyant convection, driven by temperature-dependent changes in density, is a major force here on Earth. It’s responsible for mixing in the oceans, governs the shape of flames, and drives weather patterns. The images above show flow patterns caused by buoyant convection. The colors come from liquid crystal beads immersed in the fluid; red indicates cooler fluid and blue indicates warmer fluid. You can see plumes of warmer fluid rising in some of the photos. At the same time, though, the images are beautiful simply as art and are strongly reminiscent of works by Vincent van Gogh. (Image credit: J. Zhang et al.)

    Collapsing Soap Bubbles

    The colors of a soap film are directly related to their thickness. If a film becomes thin enough (~10 nanometers), it appears black. (Here’s why.) This video shows the thinning of a vertical soap film. Normally, this is a linear process, with gravity pulling the fluid downward and progressively thinning the film from top to bottom at a constant rate. At 0:20 a cold rod slowly contacts the film, adding a thermal driver for the film’s thinning. Two large counter-rotating convection cells form underneath the rod, with weaker secondary vortices in the lower corners of the film. This drastically increases mixing in the film. Gradually small black spots, indicating very thin areas of the film, form and advect. Eventually these spots stretch, forming long tails. The thinning of the film kicks up to an exponential rate until the film becomes uniformly thin. (Video credit: M. Winkler et al.)

    Mushrooms Make Their Own Breeze

    Mushrooms don’t rely on a stray breeze to spread their spores; they generate their own air currents instead. The key is evaporation. The mushroom cap contains large amounts of water, and, as this water evaporates, it cools the mushroom and the air next to it. This cool air is denser than the surrounding air, and so tends to spread out and convect. At the same time, though, the water vapor that evaporated from the mushroom is less dense than nearby air, which helps it rise. This combination of spreading and rising air carries spores away from the mushroom cap and, as seen in the video above, can combine to form beautiful and complex currents that spread the spores.     Liquid Crystal Films

    Smectic liquid crystals can form extremely thin films, similar to a soap bubble, that are sensitive to electrically-induced convection. Here an annular smectic film lies between two electrodes. When a voltage is applied across it, positive and negative charges build up on the surface of the film near their respective electrodes. The electrical field surrounding the fluid pushes on the surface charges, causing flow inside the film. Above a threshold voltage, an instability forms and the film develops into a series of counter-rotating vortices, which spin faster as the voltage increases. The color variations in the video above are due to differences in the film’s thickness, much like iridescence of a soap bubble. (Video credit: P. Kruse and S. Morris)

    Mixing Flows

    Turbulence is an excellent mixer. Here two fluorescent dyes are injected into a turbulent water jet. Flow is from the bottom of the image toward the top. The dyes are quickly mixed into the background fluid by momentum convection, their concentration decreasing with increased distance from the source. Large-scale structures like the eddies visible in this image drive this convection of momentum in turbulent flows. In contrast, consider laminar flows, where momentum and molecular diffusion dominate how fluids move. In such laminar flows, it’s even possible to unmix two fluids, a feat that cannot be accomplished in the jet above. (Photo credit: M. Kree et al.; via @AIP_Publishing)

    Fluid Dynamics and the Nobel Prize

    Last night marked the 2013 Ig Nobel Prize Award Ceremony, in which researchers are honored for work that “makes people LAUGH and then THINK”. Historically, the field of fluid dynamics has been well-represented at the Ig Nobels with some 13 winners across the fields of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and–yes–Fluid Dynamics since the awards were introduced in 1991. This is in stark contrast to the awards’ more famous cousins, the Nobel Prizes.

    Since the introduction of the Nobel Prize in 1901, only two of the Physics prizes have been fluids-related: the 1970 prize for discoveries in magnetohydrodynamics and the 1996 prize for the discovery of superfluidity in helium-3. Lord Rayleigh (a physicist whose name shows up here a lot) won a Nobel Prize in 1904, but not for his work in fluid dynamics. Another well-known Nobel laureate, Werner Heisenberg, actually began his career in fluid dynamics but quickly left it behind after his doctoral dissertation: “On the stability and turbulence of fluid flow.”

    This is not to suggest that no fluid dynamicist has done work worthy of a Nobel Prize. Ludwig Prandtl, for example, revolutionized fluid dynamics with the concept of the boundary layer (pdf) in 1904 but never received the Nobel Prize for it, perhaps because the committee shied from giving the award for an achievement in classical physics. General consensus among fluid dynamicists is that anyone who can prove a solution for turbulence using the Navier-Stokes equation will likely receive a Nobel Prize in addition to a Millennium Prize. In the meantime, we carry on investigating fluids not for the chance at glory, but for the joy and beauty of the subject. (Image credits: Improbable Research and Wikipedia)

    10 Years of Weather

    This timelapse video captures the past 10 years’ worth of weather as seen by the GEOS-12 satellite during its service. It’s a mesmerizing look at the large-scale convective flow of Earth’s atmosphere. The prevailing winds for each region are clear from the motion of the clouds, but short-term effects are visible as well. June through November marks the Atlantic hurricane season, and you can see as storm after storm gets generated near western Africa and shoots westward toward North and Central America. You can also see the pattern tracks of these storms in these maps, which show 170 years’ worth of worldwide hurricane tracks.  (Video credit: NOAA; via Scientific American)

    Why do I never see frost on my car when I park in a detached garage or under a carport?

    Great question! Frost forms on surfaces when their temperature drops below the freezing point of water and the dew point of the surrounding air. The water vapor in the air gets deposited as a solid directly; this is called deposition. This means that the surface–in this case your car–has to be colder than the nearby air. Neither conduction nor convection of heat between your car and the surrounding air can cause this drop; heat transfer between your car and the surrounding air would tend to make them the same temperature, not make the car colder than the air. The third–and typically least effective–type of heat transfer, radiation, is the answer because it allows heat transfer between two objects that are not in direct contact like the air and car are.

    Frost typically forms on still, clear nights with little clouds or wind. A car sitting beneath a clear night sky will radiate heat out into space. Since space is much, much colder than the air, this radiation cooling to space allows the car’s surface temperature to drop below that of the surrounding air, which is not a good radiator by comparison. On a night with little wind (and thus little convection), this radiation cooling can be quite effective. Frost will tend not to form on one’s car under a carport because the car is sheltered from the night sky, blocking such radiative cooling. Having a tree or house blocking the car from the night sky is also effective at preventing frost formation. (Photo credit: N.     Fluidic Public Art by Charles Sowers

    Artist Charles Sowers creates exhibits and public art focused on illuminating natural phenomenon that might otherwise go unnoticed, and much of his work features fluid dynamics directly or indirectly.  “Windswept” and “Wave Wall” are both outdoor exhibits that show undulations and vortices corresponding to local wind flow. Other pieces explore ferrofluids through magnetic mazes or feature foggy turbulence.  My own favorite, “Drip Chamber”, oozes with viscous fluids whose dripping forms patterns reminiscent of convection cells.
