    Magnus Force

    Physics students are often taught to ignore the effects of air on a projectile, but such effects are not always negligible. This video features several great examples of the Magnus effect, which occurs when a spinning object moves through a fluid. The Magnus force acts perpendicular to the spin axis and is generated by pressure imbalances in the fluid near the object’s surface. On one side of the spinning object, fluid is dragged with the spin, staying attached to the object for longer than if it weren’t spinning.  On the other side, however, the fluid is quickly stopped by the spin acting in the direction opposite to the fluid motion. The pressure will be higher on the side where the fluid stagnates and lower on the side where the flow stays attached, thereby generating a force acting from high-to-low, just like with lift on an airfoil. Sports players use this effect all the time: pitchers throw curveballs, volleyball and tennis players use topspin to drive a ball downward past the net, and golfers use backspin to keep a golf ball flying farther.     Wingtip Vortices

    Any finite length wing produces wingtip vortices–potentially intense regions of rotational flow downstream of the wing’s ends. These vortices are associated both with the production of lift on the wing and with unavoidable induced drag. The tabletop demonstration above shows the region of the vortices’ influence and how strong the rotation is there. Note also that the two vortices have opposite rotational senses–the left side induces a clockwise rotation, whereas the right side induces an anti-clockwise rotation. The larger an aircraft, the stronger and longer lasting its vortices; this can be a source of danger for smaller aircraft passing through the wake. If a pilot crosses one wingtip vortex and overreacts to compensate, crossing the second counter-rotating vortex can cause even greater damage.

    The photos above show cross-sections through the leading edge vortices on a highly swept delta wing at angle of attack.  Flow in the photos is from the upper left to lower right. Notice how the vortices grow and develop waviness as they move downstream. When perturbations enter the vortex–for example, due to the shear between the vortex fluid and the freestream–some will grow and eventually cause a break down to turbulence, as in the lower picture.     London 2012: Discus Physics

    Like the javelin, the discus throw is an athletic event dating back to the ancient Olympics.  Competitors are limited to a 2.5 m circle from which they throw, leading to the sometimes elaborate forms used by athletes to generate a large velocity and angular momentum upon release. The flight of the discus is significantly dependent on aerodynamics, as the discus flies at an angle of attack. Spin helps stabilize its flight both dynamically and by creating a turbulent boundary layer along the surface which helps prevent separation and stall. Unlike many other events, a headwind is actually advantageous in the discus throw because it increases the relative velocity between the airflow and the discus, thereby increasing lift. The headwind also increases the drag force on the discus, but research shows the benefits of the increased lift outweigh the effects of increased drag, so much so that a discus flies further in air than it would in a vacuum.     London 2012: Javelin Physics

    Few Olympic events can boast as long as history as the javelin. Though the event has existed since the ancient Olympics, humans and our ancestors have been throwing spears for hundreds of millennia. But today’s javelin, oddly enough, is designed so that it cannot be thrown as far as those that came before. After a world record throw in 1984 that nearly reached the edge of the track, the sport’s governing body authorized new rules that shifted the weight of the javelin forward, causing the center of mass of the javelin to lie in front of its center of pressure.  This causes the javelin to tip forward in flight, ensuring it will land nose down. Simultaneously, they made changes to the nose of the javelin to reduce its lift during flight, resulting in a javelin that flies only 90% of the previous distance. Since then manufacturers have introduced other innovations to try to increase the javelin’s flight, such as a roughened tail to prevent flow separation, only to later have these changes banned.  (Photo credits: Getty Images, Zeenews)

    How Maple Seeds Fly

    Maple tree seeds flutter and spin as they descend. The above video, which shows flow visualization of a freely falling seed, demonstrates that the so-called helicopter seed’s autorotation creates a vortex along the leading edge.  Watch as the seed’s “wing” sweeps through and you will notice the vortex along the upper surface. This leading edge vortex generates high lift on the maple seed, allowing it to stay in the air more effectively than other seeds, thereby increasing the maple’s reproductive range. (Video credit: D.     Stalling a Wing

    At small angles of attack, air flows smoothly around an airfoil, providing lifting force through the difference in pressure across the top and bottom of the airfoil. As the angle of attack increases, the lift produced by the airfoil increases as well but only to a point. Increasing the angle of attack also increases the adverse pressure gradient on the latter half of the top surface, visible here as an increasingly thick bright area. Over this part of the surface, the pressure is increasing from low to high–the opposite of the direction a fluid prefers to flow. Eventually, this pressure gradient grows strong enough that the flow separates from the airfoil, creating a recirculating bubble of air along much of the top surface. When this happens, the lift produced by the airfoil drops dramatically; this is known as stall.

    Flapping to Fly Efficiently

    High-speed video shows that bats achieve some of their efficiency in flight by pulling their wings inward on the upstroke, as seen above. While this does affect drag forces on the wing slightly, the primary energy savings comes from the inertial ease of lifting the folded wing. Much the way it is easier to lift your arm when it is folded than when you stretch it outright, it takes less energy for the bat to lift a folded wing than one that is fully extended.     Micro Air Vehicle Flow Viz

    A smoke wire shows the deformation of streamlines around a swept-winged micro air vehicle (MAV). These crafts typically feature wingspans smaller than one foot and, thus, never develop the type of flow fields associated with larger fixed-wing airplanes. This complicates theoretical predictions of lift and drag for MAVs as well as making them difficult to control.     Vortices on an Airliner

    Wingtip vortices form on airplanes due to the finite length of their wings. In general, lift on the wings results from low-pressure, high-velocity air moving over the top of the wing and high-pressure, low-velocity air moving below the wing. Near the wingtips, the high-pressure air is able to slip around the edge to the top of the wing, generating a vortex that then trails behind the airplane. The same thing is occurring in the video above, except the edges of the wing’s control surfaces are serving as the tip of the wing. Similar vortices also exist at the wingtips, but they are not made visible by condensation as the aileron vortices are.
