    Incense in Transition

    A buoyant plume of smoke rises from a stick of incense. At first the plume is smooth and laminar, but even in quiescent air, tiny perturbations can sneak into the flow, causing the periodic vortical whorls seen near the top of the photo. Were the frame even taller, we would see this transitional flow become completely chaotic and turbulent. Despite having known the governing equations for such flow for over 150 years, it remains almost impossible to predict the point where flow will transition for any practical problem, largely because the equations are so sensitive to initial conditions.     Mercedes-Benz Tornado

    The world’s most powerful artificial tornado is part of the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany. Though popular enough with visitors that the staff will bring out smoke generators to make it visible, the tornado was not built as an attraction – It’s actually part of the building’s fire protection system. The modern open design of the museum meant that conventional smoke removal systems were inadequate. Instead vorticity is generated in the central lobby with 144 wall-mounted jets. The angular velocity created by the jets is strongest at the middle, in the vortex core, due to conservation of angular momentum – exactly the way a spinning ice skater speeds up by pulling his arms in. The core of the vortex is a low pressure area, which draws outside air toward it – this is how the tornado pulls in smoke when there is a fire. The fan on the ceiling provides the pressure draw necessary for the smoke to be pulled up and out of the building at a supposed rate of 4 tons per minute. See the tornado in action here.     Lift on a Paper Plane

    In this still image from a student experiment, smoke visualization shows the formation of a vortex over the wing of a paper airplane during a wind tunnel test. This wing vortex is mirrored on the opposite wing, though there is no smoke to show it. At high angle of attack, the delta-wing shape of the traditional paper air plane creates these vortices on the upper surface, which helps generate the lift necessary to keep the plane aloft.     The Boundary Layer Visualized

    Any time there is relative motion between a solid and a fluid, a small region near the surface will see a large change in velocity. This region, shown with smoke in the image above, is called the boundary layer. Here air flows from right to left over a spinning spheroid. At first, the boundary layer is laminar, its flow smooth and orderly. But tiny disturbances get into the boundary layer and one of them begins to grow. This disturbance ultimately causes the evenly spaced vortices we see wrapping around the mid-section of the model.     Truck Vortices

    The video above shows vortex rings of smoke ejected from the burning tire of a moving truck. Without seeing the damaged tire, it’s tough to pinpoint the cause with certainty, but here are a couple of ideas. Typically vortex rings are formed with a burst of air through a narrow orifice; this is, for example, how humans, dolphins, vortex cannons, and volcanoes all make smoke rings. If air is escaping the tire through small holes, this could cause rings. Unlike in those situations, though, the tire is spinning, which means its motion is already imparting vorticity to the flow, so that any air escaping the tire forms a vortex ring.     ETA: Others are suggesting the vortex rings are due to a failure of the engine, with unsteady exhaust velocities resulting in the vortex structures. I think this might still depend on the exhaust pipe’s geometry. Regardless of the exact cause, the video remains an interesting bit of fluid dynamics.

    Airborne Aerosols

    This numerical simulation from NASA Goddard shows the motion of particulates in Earth’s atmosphere between August 2006 and April 2007. These aerosols come from various sources including smoke, soot, dust, and sea salt. As these fine particles move through atmosphere, they can have significant effects on weather as well as climate.     I was driving through the rain down the highway when I noticed something strange: though the rain was heavy enough to reduce visibility to a quarter mile, the rear windshield of my Corolla was bone dry except for the streams of water flowing off the roof. There was no wind so far as I could tell, but I had to slow down all the way to ~20-25 mph for rain to start falling on the rear windshield. Why is that?

    That’s a wonderful observation! Like many sedans, your Corolla has a long, sloped rear window that acts much like a backward-facing step with respect to the airflow while the car is moving. Note the smoke lines in the photo above. At the front of the car, we see closely spaced intact lines near the hood and windshield, indicating relatively fast, smooth airflow over the front of the vehicle. At the back, though, there is a big gap over the rear windshield. This is because flow over the car has separated at the rear windshield and a pocket of recirculating air. This recirculation zone is, for the most part, isolated from the rest of the air moving over the car; that’s why the smoke lines continue relatively unaffected a little ways above the surface. This same pocket of recirculating air is protecting your rear windshield from rainfall. It’s an area of low-speed, high-pressure fluid, and the raindrops are preferentially carried by the high-speed, low-pressure air over the recirculation zone. This is one reason why many sedans don’t have rear windshield wipers. (Photo credit: F-BDA)

    A fiery jet of exhaust remains amid plumes of smoke as a Soyuz rocket lifts off from Baikonur Cosmodrome bound for the International Space Station. The lengthscales of such turbulence range from tens of meters to only millimeters, highlighting the incredible difficulty of accurately capturing and describing the fluid motion of a practical engineering problem.     Canyon Fire Timelapse

    Wildfires continue to burn across Colorado and other parts of the United States. This timelapse video shows 5 days worth of the Waldo Canyon fire. Smoke billows through the night and day, with diurnal temperature changes and winds affecting whether the turbulent plumes rise high or hover on the horizon. It is hard to describe the eeriness of watching a fire burn uncontrollably on the horizon; we hope those fighting the fires stay safe and that those affected by the fires are able to return and recover soon.     Inky Vortex

    Ink released into water shows the swirling motion inside a vortex ring as well as its deformation and breakup upon stagnation against a wall. Although humans are known to make such vortex rings with smoke or bubbles, they are common in nature as well. Buoyant plumes often feature vortex rings at their head; dolphins and whales play with bubble rings; volcanoes blow smoke rings; and mosses use them to distribute spores.
