    Lighting Engines

    Combustion is complicated. You’ve ideally got turbulent flow, acoustic waves, and chemistry all happening at once. With so much going on, it’s a challenge to sort out the physics that makes one ignition attempt work while another fails. The animations here show a numerical simulation of combustion in a turbulent mixing layer. The grayscale indicates density contours of a hydrogen-air mixture. The top layer is moving left to right, and the lower layer moves right to left. This sets up some very turbulent mixing, visible in middle as multi-scale eddies turning over on one another.

    Ignition starts near the center in each simulation, sending out a blast wave due to the sudden energy release. Flames are shown in yellow and red. As the flow catches fire, more blast waves appear and reflect. But while the combustion is sustained in the upper simulation, the flame is extinguished by turbulence in the lower one. This illustrates another challenge engineers face: turbulence is necessary to mix the fuel and oxidizer, but turbulence in the wrong place at the wrong time can put out an engine.     Sunset Vortices

    Often our atmosphere’s transparency masks the beautiful flows around us. This spectacular image shows a flight landing in Munich just after sunrise. Low-hanging clouds get sliced by the airplane’s passage and curl into its wake. The swirls are a result of the plane’s wingtip vortices, which wrap from the high-pressure underside of the wing toward the low-pressure upperside. The vortices stretch behind in the plane’s wake, creating turbulence that can be dangerous to following planes. In fact, these vortices are a major determining factor in the frequency of take-off and landing on a given runway. The larger a plane, the larger its wingtip vortices and the more time it takes for the turbulence of its passage to dissipate to a safe level for the next aircraft. (Image credit: T.     Rocket Launch Systems

    If you’ve ever watched a rocket launch, you’ve probably noticed the billowing clouds around the launch pad during lift-off. What you’re seeing is not actually the rocket’s exhaust but the result of a launch pad and vehicle protection system known in NASA parlance as the Sound Suppression Water System. Exhaust gases from a rocket typically exit at a pressure higher than the ambient atmosphere, which generates shock waves and lots of turbulent mixing between the exhaust and the air. Put differently, launch ignition is incredibly loud, loud enough to cause structural damage to the launchpad and, via reflection, the vehicle and its contents.

    To mitigate this problem, launch operators use a massive water injection system that pours about 3.5 times as much water as rocket propellant per second. This significantly reduces the noise levels on the launchpad and vehicle and also helps protect the infrastructure from heat damage. The exact physical processes involved – details of the interaction of acoustic noise and turbulence with water droplets – are still murky because this problem is incredibly difficult to study experimentally or in simulation. But, at these high water flow rates, there’s enough water to significantly affect the temperature and size of the rocket’s jet exhaust. Effectively, energy that would have gone into gas motion and acoustic vibration is instead expended on moving and heating water droplets. In the case of the Space Shuttle, this reduced noise levels in the payload bay to 142 dB – about as loud as standing on the deck of an aircraft carrier.     “Pursuit”

    Photographer Mike Olbinski has released yet another breathtaking timelapse film of weather over the Great Plains. This one has a little bit of everything: storms, tornadoes, incredible cloud formations, and even sunny days. Olbinski’s work is a reminder that there’s a constant beautiful drama playing out over our heads if we just take the time to watch. Under blue skies, condensation and turbulence are building towering mountains, and even when the sky is gray, it can be churning like the ocean just over your head. The U.S. Great Plains may be home to particularly dramatic examples of this behavior (thanks largely to the atmospheric influence of the Rocky Mountains), but these same phenomena are going on all the time overhead.     Impressionist Gibraltar

    Swirls of phytoplankton make this satellite image of Gibraltar look like an Impressionist painting. The photo is a composite of data from several instruments, with colors enhanced to highlight features of the phytoplankton blooms. The tiny plankton act as tracer particles that reveal some of the complex flow between the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean. Although narrow, the Strait at Gibraltar has deep and complex terrain that was formed during a breach flood event millions of years ago. Water flowing through that terrain sets up enormous and complicated waves well beneath the ocean surface. These drive some of the turbulence that we see here as the blue swirls east of the Strait.     Cycling Skinsuits and Vortex Generators

    It didn’t take long for an aerodynamic controversy to crop up in this year’s Tour de France. At the 14km individual time trial, riders from Team Sky wore custom Castelli skinsuits with integrated dot-like patterns on their upper arms (shown above). By the next day, a sports scientist with a competing team cried foul play, claiming that these fabrics could have given Team Sky as much as 25 seconds’ advantage over other riders. The Sky team finished with 4 out of the top 10 places on the time trial, and their leader, three-time Tour winner Chris Froome, finished some 35 seconds ahead of his expected competitors for the yellow jersey.

    Vortex generators explained

    So how could a few dots make a measurable difference? These protrusions are vortex generators meant to modify flow around a cyclist. Humans are not aerodynamic and what typically happens when air flows over a cyclist’s arms is shown in the flow visualization above: the air follows the curve of the arm part way, then it separates from the body, leaving a region of recirculation that increases drag. Vortex generators can help prevent or delay that drag-inducing flow separation by adding extra energy and turbulence to the air near the arm’s surface. Because turbulent boundary layers can follow a curve longer before separating, this helps reduce the drag by reducing the recirculation zone.

    About that time savings

    Aerodynamically speaking, those vortex generators can make a difference, but the question is, how much? In his complaint, Grappe cites a 2016 paper by L. Brownlie et al. that wind-tunnel tested different vortex generator patterns for use in running apparel. The speeds tested included those relevant to cycling. The specific numbers Grappe quotes aren’t directly relevant, however:

    As noted above, race garments that contain VG provide reductions in Fd of between 3.7 and 6.8% compared to equivalent
    advanced race apparel developed for the 2012 London Olympics which in turn provided substantially lower drag than
    conventional race apparel.

    the effectiveness of 5, 10 and 15 cm wide strips of VG applied to each flank of a sleeveless singlet revealed that the 5 cm wide
    strips provided between 3.1 and 7.1% less Fd than the 10 cm wide strips and between 1.9 and 4.3% less Fd than the 15 cm wide
    strips.  

    Here Brownlie et al. are specifically describing the savings for running apparel, which uses vortex generators in very different places than you would on a cyclist. Note the second quote even refers to a sleeveless singlet, so the vortex generators measured are definitely not in the same place as these skinsuits!

    The bottom line

    I fully expect that vortex generators give a marginal aerodynamic edge, which is why Sky and other teams have already been using them in competition. But I hesitate to declare that the savings is as high as 5-7%, and I have no way to verify Grappe’s subsequent claims that this translates to 18-25 seconds in the time trial. Those are numbers he gives without citing what model is being used to translate drag gains into time.

    In the end, what is needed is clarification of the rules. As they stand, one rule seems to allow the skinsuits because the vortex generators are integrated into the fabric, whereas another states clothing is forbidden “to influence the performances of a rider such as reducing air resistance”. Those two stances seems contradictory, and, for now, the race officials’ verdict to allow the suits stands.

    “Fractal”

    Timelapses are a wonderful way to capture the power and majesty of storms like the supercell thunderstorms featured in Chad Cowan’s “Fractal”. The video contains snapshots from six years’ worth of storms over the US’s Great Plains. The highlights include some spectacular mammatus clouds (0:30) and excellent billowing cloud formation (1:27) with turbulence every bit as towering as that of a volcanic plume. June is one of the best months for amazing storms in the Great Plains, largely thanks to the atmospheric mixing that occurs over the Rocky Mountains.     “Ink in Motion”

    In this short film, the Macro Room team plays with the diffusion of ink in water and its interaction with various shapes. Injecting ink with a syringe results in a beautiful, billowing turbulent plume. By fiddling with the playback time, the video really highlights some of the neat instabilities the ink goes through before it mixes. Note how the yellow ink at 1:12 breaks into jellyfish-like shapes with tentacles that sprout more ink; that’s a classic form of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability, driven by the higher density ink sinking through the lower density water. Ink’s higher density is what drives the ink-falls flowing down the flowers in the final segment, too. Definitely take a couple minutes to watch the full video.     When Vortices Collide

    In a new ad campaign for paint manufacturer Sherwin-Williams, the production team at Psyop show off some awesome fluid dynamics by swirling and injecting paint underwater. You can see one sequence above, where red and blue paint vortex rings collide head-on before breaking down into a purple turbulent cloud. (What a great way to demonstrate the mixing power of turbulence, right?) Here’s the full 30-second ad clip. Impressively, everything in the video is a practical effect, even the segment that flies past multicolored turbulent plumes. You can see how they filmed everything in their behind-the-scenes featurette below.     Bottle Rocket Shock Diamonds

    Mach diamonds or shock diamonds can often be seen in the exhaust of rocket engines. Here they’re shown in high-speed video of a bottle rocket’s launch. The rocket’s exhaust exits at a pressure that is higher than the surrounding atmosphere, which causes the exhaust to bulge outward and forms two expansion fans, seen in pink, to lower the pressure. The pressure actually drops too low, however, causing shock waves, seen in turquoise, to form in order to raise the exhaust’s pressure. This back-and-forth between shock waves and expansion fans continues, forming the diamond shapes we see. Each subsequent set gets weaker as the exhaust closes in on the right pressure, and ultimately the series of diamonds fades into turbulence. (Image credit: P. Peterson and P. Taylor, source)
