Microfluidic devices are valuable tools in a lab, but they are difficult and time-consuming to manufacture. Researchers looking to simplify the building of such fluidic circuits have turned to toys. The uniformity and modularity of LEGO bricks makes them a promising platform for modifiable microfluidics. Using a micromilling machine, researchers cut narrow channels into bricks, then sealed the channel with clear adhesive and a set of tiny O-rings. Their results allow them to build and rebuild simple microfluidic devices in moments. There are limitations, though. Micromills cannot cut the smallest size channels used in today’s microfluidic devices, and the plastic of the LEGO bricks restricts the chemicals and temperatures scientists can use. Bubbles Sliding
Two-phase flows involve more than one state of matter – in this case, both gas and liquid phases. Flows like this are common, especially in applications involving heat transfer. In some heat exchangers, bubbles will rise and then slide along an inclined surface, as shown above. The motion of these bubbles is a complicated interplay between the surface, the bubble, and the surrounding fluid. The bubble’s wake, visualized here using schlieren imaging, is unsteady and turbulent. Although the bubble oscillates in its path, the wake spreads even wider, and its turbulence stirs up the liquid nearby, increasing the heat transfer. (Image and research credit: R. Pascal’s Barrel Follow-Up
Pascal’s Law tells us that pressure in a fluid depends on the height and density of the fluid. This is something that you’ve experienced firsthand if you’ve ever tried to dive in deep water. The deeper into the water you swim, the greater the pressure you feel, especially in your ears. Go deep enough and the pressure difference between your inner ear and the water becomes outright painful.
In the video demonstration above, you’ll see how a tall, thin tube containing only 1 liter of water is able to shatter a 50-liter container of water. Not only does this show just how powerful height is in creating pressure in a fluid, but it shows how a fluid can be used to transmit pressure over a distance – one of the fundamental principles of hydraulics! If her demonstration was correct then the pressure of the water in lake Meade is not proportional to the volume of the lake…only proportional to its depth. Hi, hoosierfordman77, thanks for your comment! It does seem counter-intuitive that pressure in a reservoir is proportional to depth, not volume, but it is correct. If you go swimming 1 meter below the water surface, the pressure you experience is the same whether you’re in a backyard pool or the Gulf of Mexico. And, yes, a 100,000 acre lake that’s 1 foot deep has a static pressure that could be withstood by a kiddie pool.
Now engineers don’t build it that way for a couple of reasons. 1) Pascal’s Law only describes hydrostatic forces – that is, the force experienced when the water is motionless. In reality, a dam would need to withstand not only the hydrostatic forces caused by the water’s depth but also any forces exerted when the water moves due to wind action, temperature differences, etc. And 2) after evaluating all of the expected forces a structure will endure, engineers add a factor of safety to make the structure strong enough to withstand forces above and beyond what is expected in ordinary or extraordinary operation.
As for the syringe, it only adds additional pressure to the line if they do not allow a gap for air in the line to escape. That can be a bit of a challenge, as they acknowledge in the video when they discuss the effects of air bubbles in the line. However, there is every indication that they were aware of this potential in their demonstration and did everything they could to ensure that it was not affecting the result. The fact remains, however, that extra pressure in the line is unnecessary – the 1 liter of water’s depth alone will shatter that container.
Turbojet Engines

GE has a great new video with a straightforward explanation of the turbojet and the turbofan engines. The simplest description of the engines–suck, squeeze, bang, blow–sounds like a euphemism but it’s fairly accurate. The engines draw in air, compress it by making it flow through a series of small rotating blades, add fuel and combust the mixture, pull out energy through a turbine, and then blow the high-speed exhaust out the back to generate thrust. The thrust is key because it’s the force that overcomes drag on the plane and also generates the speed needed to create lift. There are two ways to significantly increase thrust: a) increase the mass flow rate of air through the engine, and/or b) increase the exhaust velocity. The turbojet engine draws in smaller amounts of air but generates very high exhaust velocities. The turbofan is today’s preferred commercial aircraft engine because it can generate thrust more efficiently at the desired aircraft velocity. The turbofan essentially has a turbojet engine in its center and is surrounded by a large air-bypass. Most of the air passing through the engine flows through the bypass and the fan. This increases its velocity only slightly, but it means that the engine accelerates much larger amounts of air without requiring much larger amounts of fuel.
