    “Pursuit”

    Photographer Mike Olbinski has released yet another breathtaking timelapse film of weather over the Great Plains. This one has a little bit of everything: storms, tornadoes, incredible cloud formations, and even sunny days. Olbinski’s work is a reminder that there’s a constant beautiful drama playing out over our heads if we just take the time to watch. Under blue skies, condensation and turbulence are building towering mountains, and even when the sky is gray, it can be churning like the ocean just over your head. The U.S. Great Plains may be home to particularly dramatic examples of this behavior (thanks largely to the atmospheric influence of the Rocky Mountains), but these same phenomena are going on all the time overhead.     Asperitas Sunset

    Asperitas clouds, previously known as undulatus asperatus, are the most recently recognized cloud type. These clouds make the sky look like the ocean rolling in waves. Photographer Mike Olbinski, on a recent storm chase earlier this month, caught these spectacular asperitas clouds near sunset. The clouds’ effect is unusual under normal circumstances and completely surreal with this lighting. Check out the video for the full effect. Olbinski caught the clouds on the outskirts of a dying storm cell. That’s a common place to see these formations; despite their ominous appearance, they do not develop storms and are more often seen as storms are ending. (Video and image credit: M.     Asperitas Clouds

    This short timelapse captures an impressive display of asperitas clouds over Augusta, Georgia. Asperitas clouds, previously known as undulatus asperatus, are a new classification recommended by the Cloud Appreciation Society in 2009. Recently, the World Meteorological Organization indicated they would include the clouds in the their latest Cloud Atlas under the new name. Asperitas clouds form under conditions similar to those of mammatus clouds – in areas with stable, cool, sinking air near the outskirts of thunderstorms. Despite their ominous appearance, the clouds are not themselves an indicator of severe weather – just a spectacular display of our atmospheric dynamics. Happy World Meteorological Day!     “Vorticity”

    Photographer Mike Olbinski is back with another storm-chasing timelapse entitled “Vorticity”. Like his previous work, this film is a breath-taking example of physics in action. It is well worth taking a few minutes to watch in fullscreen, at high resolution, and with headphones. Olbinski’s timelapses beautifully capture the incredible dynamic motion of our atmosphere. Fittingly, “Vorticity” is all about the swirling, roiling motion of supercell thunderstorms and the tornadoes they can spawn, but the film also captures many other great phenomena from the convection that builds clouds to unusual formations like undulatus asperatus and mammatus clouds.     A New Cloud

    These unusual and spectacular clouds are known as undulatus asperatus. Though they have been proposed as a new type of cloud, they are as yet officially unrecognized. Despite their dramatic appearance, these clouds are not associated with storms. Instead, they’re thought to form in a process similar to mammatus clouds, where wind shear at the cloud level causes undulations to form.     Undulatus Asperatus

    This surrealistic timelapse doesn’t show an ocean in the sky. These are undulatus asperatus clouds rolling over Lincoln, Nebraska. Also known simply as asperatus, this cloud formation has been proposed as but not yet recognized as a distinctive cloud type. Their speed is much slower than shown in the animation, but the wave-like motion is accurate and is the source of the cloud’s name, which comes from the Latin word aspero, meaning to make rough. Though they appear stormy, asperatus clouds do not usually produce storms. They form under conditions similar to those of mammatus clouds, but wind shear at the cloud level causes the undulations to form.
