This glowing, molten liquid captured by the Slow Mo Guys is thermite. The chemical reaction behind thermite is highly exothermic, hence its intense glow. There’s some great fluid dynamics hiding in this video. First, there’s the dripping thermite (Image 1), which breaks up into droplets via the Plateau-Rayleigh instability before shattering when it hits the ground.
Then there are the sequences (Images 2 and 3) of thermite dripping into water. The heat of the reacting thermite vaporizes a layer of water around it, creating a bubble that completely envelops the thermite. In other words, the falling thermite is supercavitating! That layer of air significantly reduces drag on the thermite and it insulates the thermite from the cooler temperature of the water. (Video and image credit: The Slow Mo Guys)
A jet of falling liquid doesn’t remain a uniform cylinder; instead, it breaks into droplets. In this video, Bill Hammack explores why this is and what engineers have learned to do to control the size of the droplets formed.
The technical name for this phenomenon is the Plateau-Rayleigh instability. It begins (like many instabilities) with a tiny perturbation, a wobble in the falling jet. This begins a game of tug of war. One of the competitors, surface tension, is trying to minimize the surface area of the liquid, which means breaking it into spherical droplets. But doing so requires forcing some of the the liquid to flow upward, against both gravity and the liquid’s inertia. The battle takes some time, but eventually surface tension wins and the jet breaks up.

Several years ago Fabian Oefner started spinning paint, and it’s been a perennial favorite online ever since. Here the Slow Mo Guys revisit their own paint-spinning antics by super-sizing their set-up. In some respects, it’s a little dissatisfying; as with their first time around, they don’t moderate the drill speed at all, so after the initial spin-up, the centrifugal acceleration is so strong that it just shreds the paint instead of showing off the interplay between the acceleration and surface tension’s efforts to keep the paint together.
In their largest experiment, though, the Slow Mo Guys get some interesting physics. Here there’s only a single slot for paint to exit, so the set-up doesn’t lose all its paint at once. The centrifugal acceleration flings the paint out in sheets that stretch into ligaments and then tear into droplets as they move further out. But there’s some more complicated phenomena, too. Notice the bubble-like shapes forming in the yellow paint on the lower right. These are known as bags, and they form because of the relative speed of the paint and the air it’s moving through. The Slow Mo Guys have a history of personal sacrifice in the name of cool high-speed footage, and their Super Slow Show is no exception. In a recent segment, both Dan and Gav were knocked flat by giant swinging balloons of paint, and, as you might expect, the splashes are spectacular. The speed is just right for some of the paint to form nice sheets before momentum pulls them into long ligaments. Eventually, that momentum overcomes surface tension’s ability to keep the paint together, and the paint separates into droplets, which, as you see below, rain down on the hapless victims. The simple collision of two liquid jets can form striking and beautiful patterns. Here the two jets strike one another diagonally near the top of the animation. One is slanted into the screen; the other slants outward. At their point of contact, the liquid spreads into a sheet and forms what’s known as a fishbone pattern. The water forms a thicker rim at the edge of the sheet, and this rim destabilizes when surface tension can no longer balance the momentum of the fluid. Fingers of liquid form along the edge, stretching outward until they break apart into droplets. Ultimately, this instability tears the liquid sheet apart. In a recent video, Warped Perception filmed a model rocket engine firing underwater. Firstly, it’s no surprise that the engine would still operate underwater (after its wax waterproofing). The solid propellant inside the engine is a mixture of fuel and oxidizer, so it has all the oxygen it needs. Fluid dynamically speaking, though, this high-speed footage is just gorgeous.
Ignition starts at about 3:22 with some cavitation as the exhaust gases start flowing. Notice how that initial bubble dimples the surface when it rises (3:48). At the same time, the expanding exhaust on the right side of the tank is forcing the water level higher on that side, triggering an overflow starting at about 3:55. At this point, the splashes start to obscure the engine somewhat, but that’s okay. Watch that sheet of liquid; it develops a thicker rim edge and starts forming ligaments around 4:10. Thanks to surface tension and the Plateau-Rayleigh instability, those ligaments start breaking into droplets (4:20). A couple seconds later, holes form in the liquid sheet, triggering a larger breakdown. By 4:45, you can see smoke-filled bubbles getting swept along by the splash, and larger holes are nucleating in that sheet.
The second set of fireworks comes around 5:42, when the parachute ejection charge triggers. That second explosive triggers a big cavitation bubble and shock wave that utterly destroys the tank. If you look closely, you can see the cavitation bubble collapse and rebound as the pressure tries to adjust, but by that point, the tank is already falling. Really spectacular stuff! Here you see a millimeter-sized droplet suspended in a fluid that is more electrically conductive than it. When exposed to a high DC electric field, the suspended drop begins to flatten. A thin rim of fluid extends from the drop’s midplane in an instability called “equatorial streaming”. As seen in the close-up animation, the rim breaks off the droplet into rings, which are themselves broken into micrometer-sized droplets thanks to surface tension. The result is that the original droplet is torn into a cloud of droplets a factor of a thousand smaller. In their latest video, the Slow Mo Guys team up with the Blue Man Group for some high-speed hijinks, some of which make for great fluidsy visuals. Their first experiment involves dropping a bowling ball on gelatin. The gelatin goes through some massive deformation but comes out remarkably unscathed. Gelatin is what is known as a colloid and essentially consists of water trapped in a matrix of protein molecules. This gives it both solid and liquid-like properties, which means that the energy the bowling ball’s impact imparts can be dissipated through liquid-like waves ricocheting through the gelatin before the elasticity of the protein matrix allows it to reform in its original shape.
The video ends with buckets of paint flung at Dan. The paints form beautiful splash sheets that expand and thin until surface tension can no longer hold them together. Holes form in the sheet and eat outward until the paint forms thin ligaments and catenaries. As those continue to stretch, surface tension drives the paint to break into droplets, though that break-up may be countered to some extent by any viscoelastic properties of the paint. In this video, the Slow Mo Guys prove that pouring molten copper in slow motion is every bit as satisfying as one would imagine. Because they pour the metal from fairly high up, they get a nice break-up from a jet into a series of droplets; that’s due to the Plateau-Rayleigh instability, in which surface tension drives the fluid to break up into drops. Upon impact, the copper splashes and splatters very nicely, forming the crown-like splash many are familiar with from famous photos like Doc Edgerton’s milk drop. The key difference between the molten copper and any other liquid’s splash comes from cooling; watch closely and you’ll see some of the copper solidifying along the edges and surface of the fluid as it cools. Shoot a sphere through a drop with sufficient speed, and you’ll see something like the composite photo above. Going from right to left, the projectile is initially coated in liquid and stretches the fluid behind it as it continues flying. This forms a thin sheet of fluid called a lamella with a thicker, uneven rim at its far end. The lamella continues stretching until the projectile breaks through and detaches. Now the lamella starts rebounding back on itself as surface tension struggles to keep the fluid together. A new rim forms on the front, and both the front and back rims thicken as the lamella collapses. Along the rims thicker portions start forming droplets – like spikes on a crown – as the surface-tension-driven Plateau-Rayleigh instability starts breaking the structure down.
