Beautiful auroras are the result of ions in the solar wind exciting atoms in our atmosphere. This example of magnetohydrodynamics is typically only visible in the far northern and southern reaches of the globe. But in recent years, citizen scientists noticed a new aurora outside the polar regions. It looked like a narrow purple streak with occasional fingers of green. It got nicknamed Steve. Recent satellite measurements show that the aurora seems to be a visible emission from a known phenomenon, subauroral ion drift, which features a rapid flow of charged ions. In Steve’s case, this flow moves nearly 6 km/s and is around 6000 degrees Celsius. Scientists have dubbed the aurora S.T.E.V.E., Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement, to honor the original nickname. Learn more from NASA and Science magazine. (Image credit: K. Juno’s Citizen Science
The Juno mission’s JunoCam has been producing stunning photos each time the spacecraft swoops past Jupiter. The instrument has a planning team, but its primary use is for citizen scientists, who have been suggesting images to take each orbit and have been processing those images. Most of the photos we see are like the one on the left above – photos that have been heavily color-enhanced to highlight details. The image on the right shows what Jupiter would look like to the human eye. Look closely, and you’ll catch many of the same colors and shapes in both photos.
At a recent conference, a member of JunoCam’s team presented scientific results that have come from the instrument, including analysis of Jupiter’s polar storm systems (8 vortices for the north pole and 5 for the south), tantalizing hints at Jovian equivalents to earthly cloud types, and more. Jovian Poles
NASA’s Juno mission has been revealing a side of Jupiter we’ve never seen before. We all recognize the familiar stripes of the planet’s cloud bands, but its poles are entirely different. Unlike Saturn with its hexagonal polar vortex, Jupiter’s poles are a swirling tapestry of turbulent vortices – full of features that citizen scientists are helping to reveal. All of the images in this post were created by citizen scientists helping to process raw images from Juno, and you can contribute, too! The Juno mission solicits input from the public on where and what should be imaged, in addition to providing raw images individuals can process and repost.
