The volcano Tungurahua erupts in a cloud of ash while molten lava flows down the mountain’s sides. Overhead a wispy lenticular cloud has formed where moist air flowing over the volcano dropped below its dew point. Volcanic eruptions have been known to produce shock waves and vortex rings as well as their distinctive turbulent plumes. (submitted by A. Jones III)

Pāhoehoe Lava
Lava flows come in many varieties but one of the most captivating is the pāhoehoe flow, meaning “smooth, unbroken lava” in the native Hawaiian. This type of basaltic lava features a smooth or undulating surface formed by the fluid lava beneath a cooler, congealing surface crust. They often feature low viscosity (by the standards of lava) and very high temperatures between 1100 and 1200 degrees Celsius. Here the flow shows features of viscous fluids like honey, including rope-coiling motions.

New fissures opened on Mount Kilauea in Hawaii earlier this month, resulting in some fountain-like eruptions of lava. This molten rock is a non-Newtonian fluid with shear-thinning and thixotropic properties. This is what allows the lava to flow long distances before it cools and solidifies. (via jpshoer)
