    Airflow in the Opera

    Like so many other performers, the singers and musicians of New York’s Metropolitan Opera House were left without a way to safely perform when the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic began in early 2020. In search of safe ways to perform and rehearse, the Met turned to researchers at nearby Princeton University, who worked directly with the performers to explore aerosol production and airflow in the context of professional opera.

    Through visualization and other experiments, the team found that the highly-controlled breathing of opera singers actually posed a lower risk for spreading pathogens than typical speaking and breathing. Most of a singer’s voiced sounds are sustained vowels, which produce a slow, buoyant jet that remains close to a singer. The exception are consonants, which created rapid, forward-projected jets.

    In the orchestra, the researchers found that placing a mask over the bell of wind instruments like the trombone reduced the speed and spread of air. One of the highest risk instruments they found was the oboe. Playing the oboe requires a long, slow release of air, but between musical phrases, oboists rapidly exhale any remaining air from their lungs and take a fresh breath.     Opera Singer Air Flow

    What does the air flow from a trained opera singer look like? That’s the question behind this study, which combines music and fluid dynamics. Using an infrared camera tracking carbon dioxide (CO2) exhalations from a singer during a performance allowed researchers to identify several important flow features. When breathing, air flows out the singer’s nose in a tight, downward jet with an initial velocity around 1 m/s.

    While singing, air leaves the mouth at a much lower velocity, especially during vowels where the mouth is open. With less momentum behind these exhalations, they can drift upward on the buoyant warmth of the singer’s breath. During consonants — especially plosives like t, k, p, b, d, and g — a rapid burst of air leaves the mouth, traveling at nearly 10 m/s.     Toad Singing

    With spring heading into summer, many parts of the United States enjoy a nighttime chorus of frogs and toads. These amphibians are singing to attract mates and delineate territory. Some, like this American toad, sing from the water, and the vibration of their vocal sac creates ripples that last as long as they’re vocalizing. The toad sings by closing its nostrils and mouth, then forcing air from its lungs over its vocal cords. Those vibrations are amplified by resonance in its vocal sac, generating the high chirp we hear. (Image credit: cassiescisco)

    Singing in the MRI

    We rarely consider just how complex the process is when we speak or sing. Sound waves produced in our larynx are shifted and amplified by the geometry of our throats, mouths, sinus cavities, tongues, and lips. This video provides a glimpse of that hidden complexity through a trained vocalist singing inside an MRI machine. He sings the same aria in four distinctly different vocal styles, and it’s incredible to watch all the changes his tongue, lips, and soft palette go through to produce those different sounds.     Singing Toads

    Many male frog and toad species sing during warmer months to attract mates. Some, like the American toad in the photo above, can be heard for an impressive distance. Here’s a video of an American toad in action. To sing, these amphibians close their mouth and nostrils, then force air from their lungs past their larynx and into a vocal sac. As with human sound-making, forcing air past the frog’s larynx vibrates its vocal cords and generates noise.
