NASA Langley’s Transonic Dynamics Tunnel (TDT) recently celebrated 50 years of operation. It’s 16 x 16 ft test section has hosted models of many aircraft, including the Lockheed Electra, the C-141, the F-15, the F-16, and the FA-18 shown above. The tunnel is primarily utilized for aeroelastic studies of flutter, a potentially catastrophic phenomenon where aerodynamic forces couple to a structure’s natural modes of vibration. Jupiter and the Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability
Jupiter, known for its colorful bands of stormy clouds, is a beautiful subject for fluid dynamics in action. As the planet turns, the cloud bands move at different relative speeds. This velocity difference at the interface of the bands can trigger the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, resulting in a line of whorls where the cloud bands meet. The instability has been observed on Saturn and is thought to be fairly common among gas giants.

Island Vortices
The von Karman vortex street isn’t just found in the wake of cylinders in a lab. Wind moving over islands frequently creates the effect, as in this MODIS Aqua image of the coast of Baja California, Mexico. #

Happy Anniversary, Enterprise!
Wind tunnels are great, but there’s nothing like a flight test to learn about the aerodynamics of a new vehicle. Today in 1977, the space shuttle prototype Enterprise flew on its own for the first time. Enterprise was built purely to test the shuttle’s aerodynamic behavior during gliding and landing.
