During hovering, the hawkmoth generates equal amounts of lift on its downstroke and upstroke.

In forward flight, the hawkmoth's upstroke creates downward lift.

At higher forward speeds, the hawkmoth's downward lift during the upstroke is even more pronounced, ultimately creating a limiting top speed for the insect.
