Fire Ant Rafts

On their own, fire ants are a nuisance. Their stings are venomous, painful, and irritating.

When floods drive them out of their homes, the ants rescue their young and build a raft of their own bodies. Tiny hairs on the adults and proto-ants keep them dry and trap air.

The whole colony can form a giant raft that floats to survive.
