    Expanding Water Beads

    In this timelapse, we see hydrogel beads expanding as they absorb water. There are some interesting subtleties to the physics here. Notice how, in the Petri dish segments, the beads shift from a single crystalline structure to several smaller structures. I suspect those shifts are driven by the dropping water level, which changes how surface tension interacts with the beads’ shape to create attractive forces between beads.

    Another interesting point comes as the beads expand through and out of the glass of water. Initially, the water level doesn’t change in the glass. This is because the water beads are taking up the same volume as the water that they’ve absorbed. But once the beads emerge past the water’s initial height, the water level drops dramatically. That’s because the beads are still absorbing what little water is left and continuing to expand in volume. (Image and video credit: Temponaut)

    Just getting cleaned up and ready for the day involves a lot of fluid physics. Here are a few of the phenomena you may see daily without realizing:

    Plateau-Rayleigh Instability
    This behavior is responsible for the dripping of your faucet. More specifically, it’s the reason that a falling jet breaks up into droplets. It works on rain, too!

    Forced Convection
    Everyone is familiar with a winter wind making them colder or hot air from a dryer getting the moisture off their hands. These are examples of forced convection – heat transfer by driving a fluid past a solid. Another common example? The fans in your computer!

    Liquid Atomization
    This is the process of breaking a liquid into lots of tiny droplets. Aside from any aerosol can ever, this phenomenon is also key to your daily shower and internal combustion in your car.

    Archimedes Principle
    This might be one of my favorite bits of the whole video because it hearkens back to some of my own earliest fluid dynamics exposure. Archimedes Principle says that buoyancy is equal to the weight of the fluid a body displaces. My mom (a science teacher) taught me about this one in the bathtub! It’s key to everything that ever floated, including us!

    Archimedes

    Archimedes may be the world’s most famous fluid mechanician. The story of his discovery of the principles of buoyancy (and his subsequent running naked through the streets proclaiming “Eureka!”) is classic. His other famous fluid-related invention is the Archimedes screw, a type of pump still used today in applications from moving granular flows to maintaining blood flow in heart patients. Scientific American is currently featuring a book excerpt about Archimedes and his contributions to physics and math. It’s well-worth a read. #
