Sometimes groundwater travels between the pores of materials like sand, soil, and rock.

This flow can cause internal erosion, which ultimately becomes apparent when the ground collapses into a sinkhole.

Sinkholes often form in areas with carbonate bedrock (like limestone) where the rock itself is dissolvable in water.
