    Dendritic

    “What happens when two scientists, a composer, a cellist, and a planetarium animator make art?” The answer is “Dendritic,” a musical composition built directly on the tree-like branching patterns found when a less viscous fluid is injected into a more viscous one sandwiched between two plates.

    Normally this viscous fingering instability results in dense, branching fingers, but when there’s directional dependence in the fluid, the pattern transitions instead to one that’s dendritic. In this case, that directionality comes from liquid crystals, whose are rod-like shape makes it easier for liquid to flow in the direction aligned with the rods.

    Building Ferrofluid Sculptures

    Eric Mesplé is an artist, but he’s also a blacksmith, welder, programmer, engineer, and innovator. Many of his sculptures feature ferrofluids, magnetic liquid whose movement is driven by electromagnets Mesplé designs and builds himself. In this video from Wired, we get a behind-the-scenes look at some of his work, and to me, one of the big takeaways is just how clearly science, engineering, and technology are married to art in Mesplé’s work. I imagine this is true of many of today’s artists! (Video credit: Wired)

    How Jet Engines Work

    Jet engines are a major part of aviation today, and this great video from the new LIB LAB project breaks down how jet engines operate. It focuses especially on the subject of combustion, in which fuel-air mixtures are burned to generate power and thrust. By breaking fuels down into simpler compounds, jet engines are able to accelerate exhaust gases, which creates thrust. They even provide instructions for an effervescence-driven bubble rocket so that kids can (safely!) experiment with propulsion at home. (Video credit: LIB LAB/Corvallis-Benton County Public Library)
