    Oil-Slicked Bubble Bursts

    When bubbles at the surface of the ocean pop, they can send up a spray of tiny droplets that carry salt, biomass, microplastics, and other contaminants into the atmosphere. Teratons of such materials enter the atmosphere from the ocean each year. To better understand how contaminants can cross from the ocean to the atmosphere, researchers studied what happens when a oil-coated water bubble pops.

    The team looked at bubbles about 2 millimeters across, coated in varying amounts of oil, and observed their demise via high-speed video. When the bubble pops, capillary waves ripple down into its crater-like cavity and meet at the bottom. That collision creates a rebounding Worthington jet, like the one above, which can eject droplets from its tip.

    The team found that the oil layer’s thickness affected the capillary waves and changed the width of the resulting jet. They were able to build a mathematical model that predicts how wide a jet will be, though a prediction of the jet’s velocity is still a work-in-progress. (Image credit: Р.     Predicting Contamination in Urban Environs

    The canyons of a city’s streets form a complex flow environment. To better understand the risks of a spreading contaminant, researchers simulated a release in lower Manhattan’s urban jungle. The released particles spread due to the dominant wind pattern of the area. Initially, the particles follow the street pattern and stay at a low elevation. But updrafts on the downwind side of skyscrapers lift the particles higher, spreading them to lower concentrations at more elevations.

    Measuring Contaminants in Drops and Bubbles

    Rising bubbles and droplets are common in many chemical and industrial applications. But just a tiny concentration of contaminants on their surface can completely alter their behavior, disrupting coalescence and slowing down chemical reactions.

    Historically, it’s been hard to measure the level of contamination in these some drops and bubbles, but a new study outlines a way to measure these small concentrations by perturbing the drops and watching how they deform. By analyzing how the drop shimmies and shakes, they’re able to measure its surface tension and, ultimately, the concentration of contaminants. (Image credit: S. Sørensen; research credit: B.     The Leidenfrost Crack

    In 1756, Leidenfrost reported on the peculiar behaviors of droplets on surface much hotter than the liquid’s boiling point. Such droplets were highly mobile, surfing on a thin layer of their own vapor and were prone to loud cracking noises.

    More recently, scientists have observed that drops with an initially small radius eventually rocket off the hot surface whereas larger drops end their lives in an explosion (above) – the source of Leidenfrost’s crack. Now researchers have explained why drops of different sizes have such different fates. The key is their level of contamination.

    To reach the take-off radius, the drop has to evaporate a significant portion of its volume. For an initially-large drop, that’s tough because any solid contaminants in the drop will build up along the surface of the drop as it shrinks. Eventually, they restrict the liquid from evaporating, which thins the vapor layer the drop sits on. It sinks until a part of it touches the surface.     Agnes Pockels: Surface Science Pioneer

    Today’s FYFD video tells a story I’ve wanted to share for a couple of years now. It’s about the life and work of Agnes Pockels, a woman born in the mid-nineteenth century who, despite a lack of formal scientific training, made major contributions to the understanding of surface tension and to the experimental apparatuses and methodologies used in surface chemistry in general. She accomplished all of this not in a scientific lab, but from her kitchen.

    Pockels’ story is one of curiosity, determination, and meticulous scientific inquiry. Chances are that you’ve never heard of her, but you really should. Check out the full video below to learn more! (Image and video credit: N. Sharp)

    Flowing Up a Waterfall

    Tea-drinking physicists found that it’s possible for particles to flow up a short (< 1 cm) waterfall to contaminate pure upstream sources. Their apparatus is shown above, along with an inset showing the velocity field on the surface of the channel. The blue arrows indicate flow downstream and the red arrows indicate counterflow that carries particles upstream. The researchers suspect that Marangoni effects may play a role in setting up the counterflow. The finding could have implications for pollution control and manufacturing. # (submitted by Gabe)
