Wastewater treatment plants like this one can process millions of gallons of wastewater a day.

Slowing the flow of contaminated water causes particles to settle out.

Chemicals can also speed up the process. Here two bottles of turbid water are left to settle; the one on the left has no added chemicals and the one on the right has had chemical treatment to help settle particles.
