Retention Ponds

Retention/detention ponds are a way to deal with run-off from all the impervious materials in built environments.

Typically, these artificial water stores have multiple outlets to help spread out the peak flow caused by a storm without building up too much water.

In this notional graph, the solid lines represent a storm's flow rates without a retention pond. The dashed lines show how the retention pond spreads out the drainage time and lowers the peak flow.
