Locks have long been used to help boats navigate changes in elevation along a canal's route.
Rather than rehabilitating a series of locks, Scotland built the Falkirk wheel to help reconnect two of its canals.
The clever engineering of the system makes it surprisingly energy efficient, despite its size.
