Cooling Towers

Although they often look like they're creating smoke, towers like these are usually for cooling. Their plumes are almost entirely made up of water vapor.

Many of them have extremely simple parts, like sprayers and the "fill" seen here, which increases the surface area for heat transfer.

Psychrometric charts like this one help engineers design cooling cycles that take advantage of temperature, humidity, and density changes to harness convection and evaporation for cooling.
