    Atmospheric Rivers Raise Temperatures

    Atmospheric rivers are narrow streams of moisture-rich air running from tropical regions to mid- or polar latitudes. Though relatively short-lived, they are capable of carrying — and depositing — more water than the largest rivers. But researchers have found that their impact is not measured in water content alone. Instead, a survey of 43 years’ worth of data shows that atmospheric rivers also bring unusually warm temperatures. In some cases, the authors found surface temperatures near an atmospheric river climbed to as high as 15 degrees Celsius above the typical. On average, temperatures were about 5 degrees Celsius higher than expected for the region’s climate.

    Several factors raise those temperatures — like the heat released when rising vapor meets cooler air and condenses into liquid — but the biggest effect came from carrying warm tropical temperatures to (usually) cooler regions.     The water cycle is quite a bit more complicated than what we learn in elementary school, and the environment around us contributes to that cycle in invisible but vital ways. In this video, Joe Hanson of It’s Okay to Be Smart pulls back the veil on this in the context of the Amazon river basin and how the Amazon rainforest itself creates an atmospheric river that carries more water than its namesake river.

    Trees release water into the air almost constantly as they transpire. And to trigger that water to fall as rain, trees can release other compounds that serve as a nucleus around which raindrops can form. The condensing raindrops form clouds, which lower the air pressure and create winds, thereby creating an atmospheric river flowing from the Atlantic back up the Amazon River.     The Atmospheric River

    Atmospheric rivers are long, narrow corridors of concentrated water vapor transport in the atmosphere. They often occur when winds from storms over the ocean draw moisture together and project it ahead of a cold front. The phenomenon was only recognized in the 1990s, but subsequent research has shown that atmospheric river conditions account for many instances of heavy rainfall and flooding in areas along the West Coast of the United States.
