Sandgrouse

Written by

Nicole Sharp

in

This male desert sandgrouse collects water in his feathers to carry to chicks up to 20 miles away.
Here the feather soaks in and holds water.
This ability is rooted in the microscale structure of the bird's feathers, which deform to soak in and hold water through capillary action.
