Leaky Resonators

Written by

Shaking a disk over a pool of water creates an oscillatory air flow that distorts the water surface.
Inside the yellow circle (beneath the disk), there are standing waves; beyond the disk, the waves travel outward.
A similar behavior happens inside the body of a guitar, with leaky resonance coming out the sound hole.
