Welcome, Wired readers! I’m stunned, honored, and very grateful to see FYFD featured on this year’s 101 Signals science recommendations, especially given how much I admire many of the others on that list! The premise of FYFD is simple: every weekday I post a new photo or video and a brief explanation of the fluid dynamics and physics therein. Topics include everything from chip-sized microfluidics to astrophysics, from super-slow-moving flows to hypersonic planetary re-entry, from the aerodynamics of cycling to the bizarre behavior of cyrogenic superfluids. You can find a little bit of just about anything here. Jump into the visual archive and take a look around. I’m also always happy to answer reader questions on Tumblr or by email. Happy reading! – Nicole

Happy Birthday, FYFD!
Today marks the third birthday of FYFD, and it’s been a pretty crazy ride so far. Three years ago, I would have never predicted a blog about fluid dynamics could gain over 170,000 followers. (Thanks for proving me wrong!) As part of my efforts to continue FYFD’s science outreach, I am conducting a reader survey. My goals are to learn about FYFD’s reader demographics and to solicit advice for future improvements to the site. Please take a few moments to participate!
The FYFD archives contain more than 800 posts. As part of our birthday celebration this week, we’ll take a trip back through the archives to revisit some of my favorites. Stay tuned, and don’t forget to fill out the survey! Thanks for helping make FYFD a success. (Photo credit: Unknown photographer/The Paper Wall)

Happy Valentine’s Day!
Here’s a potential flow field with heart-shaped streamlines, made just for you. Thank you to everyone for having helped made FYFD such a success over these 700 posts, whether by liking, reblogging, tweeting, or telling a friend. Happy Valentine’s Day!
For the curious among you, the flow is a superposition of uniform flow, two sources, and two sinks. The Matlab code is here. Have fun!
APS Division of Fluid Dynamics 2012
Just a heads up that I’ll be at the annual American Physical Society Division of Fluid Dynamics meeting in San Diego starting this weekend. There are regular posts lined up, but additional supplemental posts may also go up in addition to plenty of Twitter updates.
Welcome!
I’d like to extend a special welcome to all our new followers here at FYFD. It’s been an exciting week since getting featured in the Tumblr Spotlight! In general, we try to bring you new fluid mechanical tidbits every weekday, but we also accept submissions and user questions, so if you’ve seen something cool online that’s not already in the archive or you have a burning question about how something works, speak up!
Happy Birthday, FYFD!
Today marks the one year anniversary of FYFD! I’d like to thank each of you for reading, commenting, submitting posts and asking questions. It’s been fun, and, hopefully a bit educational, too. Next week, in addition to new content, I want to feature some favorites from the archives. So take a gander at the past year of FYFD and comment with your favorites. What deserves a re-visit? What would you like to see in the future?
Hiatus
FYFD will be under a brief hiatus due to a family emergency. Thank you!
Commenting Enabled
As of now, commenting has been added to FYFD via Disqus, which allows users to log in via Twitter, Facebook, etc. Hopefully, this will encourage greater interaction and discussion on the site. For example, if you have any suggestions for general audience fluid dynamics books, you can recommend them directly now!
Hello, New Folks!
Lots of new faces around here at FYFD, so thanks, everyone, for spreading the word! As a reminder, you’re welcome to submit post ideas if you see something neat online and you can also ask any questions you have related to fluid mechanics, and I’ll do my best to answer them or find someone who can! I also respond to comments on Twitter, if you prefer.
