Walking in the Wake of a Cylinder

A cylinder placed in a flow generates alternating vortices in a pattern known as a von Karman vortex street.

A hydrofoil placed in the wake of the cylinder will wend its way between vortices.

Rotating the cylinder to control its shedding frequency creates a wake that causes a double pendulum to move in a manner similar to a human's walking gait.
